When Life "Stops" Your Training Part 6 - posted on - 22:30:59 2010-02-07

Unfortunatily there are times in life when illness or other serious setbacks make it impossible for you to continue training. Speaking with your doctor is a great idea. Ask what you are safely capable of doing and use that info to track down a teacher qualified to assist you. The internet is a good tool, when used right, to assist you in your training also. Just be sure not to copy clips on Youtube and claim to be the 871st inheritor of some style. Be honest with yourself.

If you find yourself completely unable to train in your style anymore, for whatever reason, it may be time to learn a new art. There is too much to learn in Martial Arts that one lifetime is not enough to master everything! I stand by the saying "Perfect 1 technique rather than learn 10,000 halfway" but if you really have no other choice, do you just stop training altogether or add a new twist to your "personal" Martial Art? I have been fortunate enough to learn from many different people over time that only add to the way I train. If you are unwilling to learn a different Martial Art to the one you have spend so much dedicated time to, then consider what else would add to it. Yoga? A stretch class at the gym? The limits are only going to be set by you. The is really no reason to completely quit.

Many Martial Arts (if not most) have an "internal" aspect to them. During the times when you can't make it to training, doing meditation or Chi Gung is a great way to continue on your Path. Many people train for the "fighting" aspect of Martial Arts, but even a teacher of the most combat oriented style that I know (Sifu Luke Holloway of RAW) trains much more than his "external" skills.

It is important to know the art you practice. But an often overlooked component of learning your art is that your body also needs to be in good enough condition to perform the tasks you ask of it. Is your stretching what it should be? How about your ability to not run out of breath while training over long periods? I dont ever remember my Sifu letting me stop to catch my breath while training. Neither would someone that you may need to defend yourself against! How about conditioning of your hands and feet? Can your fist actually take the force of delivering a punch? Physical fitness is an important component of training Martial Arts that can be worked on over those times when you can't make it to training.
